Central American tournament headed to U.S.

[DATEBOOK] A second regional championship is moving to the United States in the fall, and this one won't have the participation of the U.S. national team. The Copa Centroamericana will be held Sept. 3-13 in the United States.

The Central American championship will qualify an undetermined number of  teams for the 2015 Gold Cup and the champion for the 2016 Copa Centenario, the special edition of the Copa America.

Traditionally, the tournament has been held in January and the top five of the seven Central American entrants have advanced to the Gold Cup.

The executive committee of UNCAF, the Central American regional body, revised the schedule in order to allow Central American national teams to call on their top stars for this tournament.  The match dates have been selected to coordinate with FIFA’s international calendar, so that all teams can play the tournament with their “A” teams.

Concacaf recently moved its women's championship from Mexico to the United States. It will take place in October and qualifying the top three teams automatically to the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada.
