Galaxy aims to begin turnaround, Johnson suspended

[MLS: Week 12] Citing a heavy dose of road games to explain away a mediocre record is all well and good, as long as results can be generated at home. The LA Galaxy will need a win at StubHub Center on Wednesday to escape the Western Conference basement. D.C. United has managed to get out of the Eastern Conference cellar into which it sunk last season, but it will be without Eddie Johnson for its match with Houston as he as slapped with a one-game suspension by the MLS disciplinary committee for a reckless challenge in last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Montreal.

LA GALAXY-FC DALLAS. The Galaxy (2-3-3) hosts FC Dallas (5-5-2) at StubHub Center in just its third home game of the season, and it needs to do a better performance in the absence of U.S. internationals Landon Donovan and Omar Gonzalez than it displayed last week in a 1-0 loss at Houston. Rob Friend and Samuel started up top with Robbie Keane in support and head coach Bruce Arena used Gyasi Zardes, Robbie Rogers and Raul Mendiola (in his MLS debut) as subs in a futile effort to get a goal that never came despite producing 19 shots, six of which were on frame.

FC Dallas slowed its recent slide by tying Chivas USA, 1-1, at home last weekend. It has conceded 10 goals in five away games, and without a tighter effort defensively the Galaxy won’t be blanked again this week.

D.C. UNITED-HOUSTON. United took it on the chin against the Dynamo last year, losing all three meetings by combined scores of 8-2. Two of those games were at RFK Stadium, where D.C. managed just one goal in a 2-1 loss. The other game ended 4-0 to the visitor.

So far in 2014, Houston (5-5-2) is just two points and two spots in the standings ahead of fourth-place D.C. (4-3-3). During the offseason, United acquired defender Bobby Boswell from Houston, which untypically has conceded at least three goals in a game on three occasions.

The Dynamo attack is also depleted by the international callups for its two primary attacking catalysts out of midfield, Brad Davis (USA) and Oscar Boniek Garcia (Honduras). Without that pair, Giles Barnes -- who scored twice against United last year and netted last weekend to down the Galaxy, 1-0 -- and Andrew Driver will need to push the attack, and head coach Dominic Kinnear could also give a start to Omar Cummings.

Johnson broke out of his personal scoring drought by heading home a Fabian Espindola cross late in United’s 1-1 tie with Montreal last week. But his reckless challenge on Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins earlier in game earned his a one-game suspension by the MLS disciplinary committee.
