Eddie Johnson gets red card rescinded

[MLS: Week 13] For once this season, something has gone right for Eddie Johnson. The D.C. United striker, who did not make the USA's World Cup short list after playing a huge role in qualifying for Brazil 2014, had his red card picked up in D.C. United's 2-1 loss to New England rescinded by MLS's independent review panel. It clears Johnson to play for D.C. United against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night at RFK Stadium.

Johnson was coming off a one-game suspension imposed after the fact by MLS's disciplinary committee for an incident with Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins when he was red carded in the 82nd minute of Saturday's game with the Revs. Referee Juan Guzman determined Johnson had committed a “violent” foul on Kelyn Rowe, which would warranted a two-game suspension, even though Johnson did not appear to touch the Revs midfielder.

Portland Timbers defender Michael Harrington and FC Dallas midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson were both issued straight red cards by referee Sorin Stoica for an apparent altercation earlier in the season but had them rescinded on appeal after the Timbers and FC Dallas jointly submitted an appeal for review of the play.

In 2013, Obafemi Martins and Oswaldo Alonso of Seattle, Carlos Salcedo of Real Salt Lake and Joaquin Velasquez of Chivas USA had red cards rescinded. (In Salcedo's case, it was for mistaken identity on a hand ball in the penalty area.)

CHIVAS USA-PORTLAND. Nigerian Fanendo Adi scored his first two MLS goals to lead the Portland Timbers to a 2-0 win at Chivas USA before  just 3,702 spectators. The win moved the Timbers, unbeaten in six straight games, back to the .500 record and jumped them into sixth place. The crowd was the smallest in MLS history. The previous record low was 3,805 for Colorado-Chicago at Mile High Stadium in 2006.
