Miami pulls plug on latest Beckham stadium plans

[MLS EXPANSION] Is it time for David Beckham hand in his option to purchase an MLS team? That's one of the choices he'll have to consider after the latest setback in his bid to win support for a site to build a soccer stadium in Miami. After dropping Plan A, a bayfront location near PortMiami, Beckham's group turned its attention to Plan B,  another downtown location that Miami's two mayors said three weeks ago were "a perfect match." Or so they claimed.

On Tuesday, Miami mayor Tomas Regalado pulled the plug on the proposal to fill in a boat slip to create land for a stadium and pedestrian walkway along Biscayne Bay, between Museum Park and AmericanAirlines Arena, home of the NBA's Miami Heat.

The proposal would have required voter approval -- and early polling showed that Miami citizens were split with voters 65 and older, more likely to vote in mid-term elections, opposed by a margin of 60-24 -- but Regalado's swift about-face, in the face of opposition from residents, is a shocking development.

“Our team’s going to pause,” John Alschuler, Beckham’s real-estate adviser, toldthe Miami Herald. “They’re going to consider all alternatives and look forward to constructive engagement.”

While there was a difference in numbers in terms of how much Miami Beckham United would pay the city of Miami in rent, that became a moot point as neighboring condo owners protested the plans to fill in the slip.

Regalado apparently listened.

Hmm. Maybe MLS has found a purchaser for Chivas USA? I will always stay loyal and true to my Galaxy, but it would be great to have Becks back in Southern California.

Regalado is not looking at the future. Such a shame... There is a reason Seattle is so successful - it's near other businesses! Everyone wins.
