[WORLD CUP: Off the Post] Bangladesh has never come close to qualifying for a World Cup, but residents of South Asia nation are big fans – of Brazil and Argentina. That doesn't sit well with flag-envy rulers.

"With the World Cup knocking at the door, we have become a nation of Argentina and Brazil,” said Mustafizur Rahman, government administrator of Jessore district. “Everywhere you see flags of Argentina and Brazil are on almost every rooftop.”

AFP reports that many Bangladeshi towns and cities have been turned into seas of yellow and green or blue and white because of the huge support for the South American teams.

"We don't mind people wearing jerseys of their favorite teams or use billboards or banners,” saod Rahman. “But it does not look good when flags of foreign nations flying on your rooftops."

Officials are driving around asking people to take down the flags. An uphill battle in a country were four years ago riots broke out when a power outages interfered with TV coverage of South Africa 2010 and factories were shut down to prevent further blackouts.

And this with cricket and field hockey as probably the top two team sports in Bangladesh!

My word. Don't they have freedom of expression in Bangladesh? Let the people fly any flag they want.

Most countries on this world do not have freedom of expression (or any other freedoms for that matter). Be grateful for what you have.
