Brazil President Dilma Rousseff spoke to the Brazilian people in a prerecorded television address on Tuesday, in which she described hosting the 2014 World Cup as a triumph for the Brazilian people, while calling on the national team to bring home the World Cup trophy.

"From Thursday, the eyes of the world will turn to Brazil, sharing in the greatest World Cup in history," she said. "Brazil overcame the main obstacles and is ready on and off the pitch for the cup. The pessimists ... have been defeated by the hard work and determination of the Brazilian people, who never give up," she said, before addressing the national team directly: "Beneath those green and canary jerseys, you embody a powerful legacy of the Brazilian people. The national team represents nationality," she said.

Brazil hosts the 2014 World Cup following countless stadium and infrastructure project delays as well as the imminent threat of public transportation strikes in major cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. However, according to reports, the stadiums have now been finished and the strikes called off. Even so, a survey last weekend shows that 54 percent of Brazilians believe that hosting the World Cup will ultimately do the country more harm than good, even if 68 percent believe the Selecao will win the tournament.
