Former champions meet in fourth round

[U.S. OPEN CUP] The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup continues with six games on Tuesday, including a meeting between two former champions, D.C United and USL PRO's Rochester Rhinos, and two in-state matchups, FC Dallas-San Antonio Scorpions and Philadelphia Union-Harrisburg City Islanders.

FC Dallas and San Antonio drew in preseason, while the Union and Islanders have an affiliate agreement.

SATURDAY. The New York Cosmos, the 2013 NASL champions, were the big winners with a 3-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls in the first Big Apple derby. The Carolina RailHawks and Atlanta Silverbacks also won against MLS opposition in fourth-round play.

Mads Stokkelien led the Cosmos with two excellent goals to the delight of 9,364 fans at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium. Alessandro Noselli has the third goal for the Cosmos, who could have won by a bigger margin. The Red Bulls lost rookie Chris Duvall to a red card late in the game.

The Silverbacks outshot Real Salt Lake, 20-8, but needed a stoppage-time goal from Ghanaian Kwadwo Poku to beat Real Salt Lake, 2-1. Poku assisted on Junior Burgos' goal after Luke Mulholland had put RSL ahead.

Carolina beat Chivas USA for the second year in a row, though it needed a shootout this time after their game ended 1-1. In 2012, the Goats had won in Cary in stoppage time.

WEDNESDAY. The San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo both won their opening U.S. Open Cup matches, though the Quakes needed to recover from a 1-0 deficit to beat Sacramento Republic FC, 2-1, on goals by Khari Stephenson and Cordell Cato at San Francisco's Kezar Stadium. Honduran Alex Lopez had his first goal for the Dynamo to beat the PDL's Laredo Heat, 1-0, in a match that saw both teams finish with 10 players.
