Mexico coach Miguel Herrera sang the praises of captain Rafael Marquez, whom he recalled to the squad after being appointed Mexico boss last October, after the former New York Red Bulls defender headed Mexico into the lead against Croatia during its final Group A game, which it won, 3-1.

When asked about the decision to include Marquez in his 23-man squad, Herrera said: "Rafa, I called him and asked him to be captain and the leader of our team. We needed a leader, concentrated, involved, commanding, screaming, shouting, giving my instructions on the field," he said. "I did not hesitate to appoint him captain. He was the only one, if nothing happened and God-willed and he was in good shape. I had no doubt that he was number one in the list of 23. He has given leadership in the group, that's why they call him 'the boss' in the group."

With the win, Mexico finished second in Group A, tied on points with winner Brazil, but second due to an inferior goal difference. El Tri will line up against the Netherlands, which won Group B, in the round of 16 on Sunday.
