[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Four-time continental club champion Pachuca threw down the gauntlet in the 2014-15 Concacaf Champions League Wednesday by demolishing Honduran club Real Espana, 4-1, in the Group 1 opener for both teams.

Pachuca jumped ahead midway through the first half with the first of two goals by Erick Gutierrez. Rodrigo Lozano scored five minutes later, and after Gutierrez scored again early in the second half Ariel Nahuelpan tacked on the fourth.

Los Tuzos, which lost to Leon last May in the finals of the Liga MX Clausura playoffs, actually scored all five goals. Real Espana only got on the board through an own goal by Colombian Aquivaldo Mosquera in the 69th minute.

Pachuca is coached by former Mexican national team manager Enrique Meza, who led Pachuca to victory in the last two editions of the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2007 and 2008.  Pachuca also won the Champions League four years ago. It plays the third team in the group, Municipal, in Guatemala City on Aug. 27. Real Espana and Municipal square off Aug. 21.

In Group 2, which also includes 2013 MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City, Real Esteli of Nicaragua tied Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa, 1-1. Rodrigo Vallente  scored for the host in the 10th minute and it survived well into the second half, but Saprissa equalized in the 65th minute on a goal by Ariel Rodriguez. The Nicaraguan club played its 13th match in this competition without winning.

SKC plays Real at Estadio Independencia in Esteli on Aug. 19.

Tuesday ...

Italian Marco Di Vaio scored in the 21st minute as the 10-man Montreal Impact beat FAS of El Salvador, 1-0, in its opening game.

The Impact held on despite playing the final 28 minutes a man down after defender Hassoun Camara was red carded. Montreal came into the game with a six-game losing streak, all in MLS action.

Tuesday night's shocker took place in Mexico City, where defending champion Cruz Azul had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Alajuelense.
