Bears' Onumonu is difference in Bay Area derby
[SANTA CLARA-CALIFORNIA: Women] No. 23 California gained revenge for its loss to Bay Area rival Santa Clara in the 2013 NCAA Tournament when it edged the No. 20
Broncos, 2-1, on a penalty kick from senior Lorin Hom in the 93rd minute. The penalty was the second of the game awarded after Cal star Ifeoma Onumonu was taken down in the box.
Santa Clara took the lead in the first half when Kat Mcauliffe scored
from close range on a pass from Jenna Roering, but the Bears capitalized on a corner kick in the 64th minute and junior Samantha Witteman equalized.
In the 10th minute, Cal was awarded a penalty kick when Onumonu was taken down in the box, but Norwegian
freshman Guro Bergsvand had her the shot saved by Andi Tostanoski. The second time, Hom stepped up and did not miss.
"I thought it was really important to put the game away right there," Hom said. "Ify was the one who made the run to get us there. I felt like we dominated most of the game and we were the
better team for most of the game, so I didn’t feel too pressured."
Cal finished with a 19-7 edge in shots.
“We played much better today than we did on Friday but
sometimes results and performance don’t go together,” said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. “Credit to Cal who was a little better than us
today. Andi played very well in goal for us today but the difference was Onumonu. Her speed and ability drew two penalty kicks today. We moved the ball better today and scored a quality goal so there
are some things to be optimistic about for our attacking play. We were unable to find the second goal today but Cal was.”
