[MASSACHUSETTS: Men] Devin O'Neill, the top men's assistant the past two years at Massachusetts, has been named the Minutemen's interim head coach following the death of Sam Koch. David Lindholm has left the Colorado Rapids, where he was the director of media relations, to become the UMass assistant coach and work with the team's goalkeepers.

O'Neill had previous head coaching stops at defunct Division I program East Carolina (1999-2002) and Division III Gettysburg (2003-09). He came to UMass following a two-year stint at Bradley in which the Braves participated in the NCAA Tournament each season.

Lindholm, who also worked in MLS at Chivas USA, spent three seasons as a head coach at Salisbury (Conn.) School and a year as the goalkeeping coach at Middlebury College. Both O'Neill and Lindholm are Middlebury graduates.

UMass, which returns eight starters from last year's team that went 4-14-1, opens with a four-game road swing, playing at Utah Valley in its first-ever NCAA Division I match, and then heading to California for matches at San Jose State, Santa Clara and Cal Poly.

Sammy died? When? How? That's a huge shock! We became acquainted during his stint at Stanford. I thought he was a great guy and that it was too bad Boston tugged as hard at him as it did.
