There's been good news and bad news for West Virginia fans since Marlon LeBlanc took over as men's coach in early August, arriving from Penn State, where he was an assistant.

The Mountaineers earned preseason victories over No. 19 Virginia Tech (1-0) and Marshall (2-0) but lost New Zealand international Jarrod Smith. West Virginia’s leading scorer the past three seasons was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Smith, son of famed New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith, had played for New Zealand last spring against Brazil in a World Cup warmup in Switzerland. As recently as mid-August, he was with the touring All Whites in England.

The Mountaineers face difficult tests against Fairfield, the MAAC favorite, and rising Mid-American power Buffalo at this weekend's WVU Shootout.
