U.S. Soccer: U.S. U-20s beat Mexico
January 31st, 2001 12AM

The U.S. under-20 national team passed its first international test of the year, defeating Mexico 1-0 in Guadalajara, Mexico, Jan. 30. Kyle Martino's 34th minute goal provided the margin of victory. U.S. defender Phillip Salyer recorded the assist on the goal, Martino's second of the year. The Mexicans outshot the U.S. 13-6, but U.S. goalkeeper D.J. Countess made five saves to preserve the shutout and the win. The match was a physical one, as is typical for the CONCACAF rivals, and the teams committed a combined 35 fouls. The match was Wolfgang Sunholz's team's second in Mexico this week. On Jan. 28, the U.S. drew with Mexican club side Chivas, 0-0. The U.S. and Mexico will square off one more time on Thursday, Feb. 1, before the team returns to the United States. The U.S. will regroup for a training camp in mid-February and then regroup one more time in March for a training camp immediately before heading to Trinidad & Tobago for CONCACAF U-17 World Championship qualifying March 18-22. The Americans are grouped with Guatemala, Costa Rica and the hosts in the qualifying tournament.
