It was a bad weekend for American players in the English Premier League.

Brad Friedel helped Blackburn upset defending Premier League champion Arsenal, 2-1, at Highbury but faces the prospect of knee surgery after spraining his knee in practice before the game.

Claudio Reyna was stretchered off the field during the first half of Sunderland's Monday game still in progress at Bolton. The extent of his injury was not known, but his knee with heavily bandaged, and he was taken to the hospital for examination.

ENGLAND

* Brad Friedel (Blackburn, PL), at Arsenal, 2-1. Started: 90 minutes. Despite spraining his knee prior to the match, Friedel was sensational in goal, frustrating the defending Premier League champions. Friedel's manager, Graeme Souness, said after the game: ''I think we've got the best keeper in the country, but he has a cartilage problem, and it popped out again during the warm-up when his knee jarred.'' Friedel plans to have surgery soon to fix the problem and will miss a few weeks of action, according to wire reports.

* Kasey Keller (Tottenham, PL), at Liverpool, 1-2.

Started: 90 minutes. Loss dropped Spurs to fifth in the EPL.

* Joe-Max Moore (Everton, PL), at West Ham, 1-0.

DNP. Moore has yet to play for Everton this season in the EPL.

* Jovan Kirovski (Birmingham, PL), vs. Manchester City, 0-2.

Entered as a substitute: 87th minute. Kirovski made third appearance in EPL for Birmingham.

* Claudio Reyna (Sunderland, PL), playing Monday.

* Marcus Hahnemann (Reading, D1), at Preston North End, 0-1.

Started: 90 minutes.

* Eddie Lewis (Preston North End, D1), vs. Reading, 1-0.

Started: 89 minutes. Lewis celebrated return with assist in winning goal. He had been out with a rib injury.

GERMANY

* Gregg Berhalter (Energie Cottbus, D1), at VfB Stuttgart, 0-0.

DNP. Missed second straight game for Cottbus.

* Conor Casey (Hannover 96, D1), at Bayern Munich, 3-3.

Started: 66 minutes. Voetbal International rating (10-high; 1-low): 6.0. NAC, one of three unbeaten teams in the Eredivisie, is tied for fifth with Willem II.

DNP. Match was first Hejduk has missed since joining St. Gallen, which snapped its five-game winless streak.

CHILE

Started: 90 minutes. UC gave up penalty kick three minutes after going head. UC missed a chance to close within one point of leader Cobreloa, which tied Universidad de Chile, 1-1.

HONDURAS

* David Castellanos (Motagua, D1), at Platense, 1-2.
