U.S. Soccer: Myernick to take U-23s to England in early August

U.S. national team assistant coach Glenn Myernick will take the U-23 team to Huddersfield, England, for four games against professional reserve teams in seven days.

The team is dominated by college players but includes three MLS players -- Kyle Beckerman and Seth Trembly of the Colorado Rapids and the Columbus Crew forward Edson Buddle -- and two English-based players -- Ian Joy of Kidderminster and Zach Whitbread of Liverpool.

Not included are World Cup stars Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley, who are eligible to play on the 2004 Olympic team as U-23s. The U.S. U-23s (born on or after Jan. 1, 1981) will attempt to qualify for the Athens Olympics for the sixth straight time in early 2004.

The U-23 England schedule: Aug. 1 -- Bolton Wanderers reserves; Aug. 3 -- Huddersfield Town reserves; Aug. 5 -- Crew Alexandria reserves; Aug. 7 -- Manchester United reserves.

Goalkeepers: Doug Warren (Clemson Univ.), Jason White (Princeton Univ.). Defenders: Nelson Akwari (free agent), Ian Joy (Kidderminster, England), Ricky Lewis (Clemson Univ.), David Stokes (Univ. of North Carolina), Scott Thompson (UCLA), Zach Whitbread (Liverpool, England), Chris Wingert (St. John's Univ.), Alex Yi (free agent). Midfielders: Kenny Arena (Univ. of Virginia), Kyle Beckerman (Colorado Rapids), Brian Carroll (Wake Forest Univ.), Ned Grabavoy (Indiana Univ.), Logan Pause (Univ. of North Carolina), Seth Trembly (Colorado Rapids). Forwards: Edson Buddle (Columbus Crew), Alecko Eskandarian (Univ. of Virginia), David Testo (Univ. of North Carolina), Jason Thompson (Eastern Illinois Univ.).
