TOP STORY: Soccer America Daily
U.S. does bare minimum
Sunday, Sep 7, 2008 7:00 AM ET
Photo Mike Woitalla reports from Havana
In what was surely the least intimidating atmosphere the USA will face in their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, it eked out a 1-0 over Cuba in Havana. The Cuban fans filled only half the Pedro Marrero Stadium and were more than 30 yards from the field because of the running track. They applauded as the American players were introduced, giving their loudest welcome to Landon Donovan. And they cheered when the Americans waved goodbye.

Deja Bruce
There was a decidedly familiar air to Bruce Arena's words as he made his first move at the Galaxy: "Unfortunately ... in order to bring Eddie [Lewis] to the Galaxy we were required to make salary budget space available and our only available option was to move Carlos [Ruiz] ..."

"There wasn't much soccer played in either game. Just a lot of kicking balls."

-- U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra on the USA's first two games of the semifinal round of 2010 World Cup qualifying: Saturday's 1-0 win at Cuba and a victory by the same score Aug. 20 at Guatemala.
