Farewell, Hope Solo

I have admired Hope Solo for many reasons. I've sent YouTube clips of Solo's highlights to goalkeepers I've trained, because I believe that players learn more by imitating stars than from listening to coaches' advice.

Portland and Columbus defied the odds -- and economic reality -- by reaching the MLS championship game last year. Their problems this season are indicators that a steady increase in high-spending expansion teams can squeeze the resources of more frugal operations.

Olympic women's soccer left the taste of what might have been. A USA-Brazil semifinal at Maracana Stadium would have been awesome. As would have been -- for the cause of women's soccer -- a Brazil gold medal.

'Cagey' Swedes deserve some credit

The USA women fell short of the semifinals of a major tournament for the first time when they were beaten by Sweden in the quarterfinals, and on Tuesday the Swedes also beat host Brazil to reach the gold-medal game. They must be doing something right.

Assessing the middle third -- of the MLS season

Coaches and executives often speak of dividing a season - much as they do of the field itself -- into thirds. You defend in your defensive third, try to control the middle third, and strive to exploit scoring opportunities in the final (attacking third).
