U.S. WOMEN ABROAD (Aug. 28-Sept. 1): Asker advances to Norwegian Cup semifinals

Asker, with former Philadelphia Charge forward Darci Borski, advanced to the Norwegian Cup semifinals on Saturday, beating host Arna-Bjornar on penalties following a 3-3 tie.

Lindy Melissa Wiik scored two first-half goals for Asker, but Arna-Bjornar rallied to tie the score on Anne Bugge Paulsen's 82nd-minute goal and go ahead on Kari Forthun strike six minutes into overtime.

U.S. SOCCER: Convey back for World Cup qualifiers

U.S. coach Bruce Arena has named a 23-man roster for upcoming World Cup qualifying games against El Salvador and Panama.

Included in the squad that has begun training in Massachusetts is Bobby Convey, 21, who was not called for the USAÆs 1-1 draw against Jamaica Aug. 18, the opening match of semifinal-round qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World.

OLYMPICS: U.S. captures women's gold

The United States won the gold medal in women's soccer at the Athens Olympics thanks to an overtime strike from Abby Wambach that gave the Americans a 2-1 victory over Brazil.

The victory was fond farewell for the U.S. veterans who captured their first world title at the 1991 World Cup, but the U.S. youngsters were the difference.
