One of the most experienced players on MLS expansion club Philadelphia Union is defender Danny Califf, the 29-year-old who returns to MLS after playing in the Danish Superligasince 2005. The younger players, such as 18-year-old forward Danny Mwanga, appreciate the guidance offered by the veteran.

“Danny Califf is one of the guys making sure weare doing things the right way,” said Mwanga, the first overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft. “During breaks, he is telling you what you did right and what you did wrong.” But Coach PeterNowak stops short of annointing Califf leadership status, because …

“I don’t believe in leaders,” says Nowak. “I believe in the whole team. Danny is an experienced guy who will makeour team better and everybody around better. Practice will define who the leaders will be, but we will not try to point out one leader because I don’t believe in that.”
