[AROUND THE NET] As demand for soccer fields grows, the sport comes in competition with those who would like to keep the habitat as is. In Denton, Texas, that
pits soccer against bird-watchers.
On a wintry day in the park, Tom Judd points out to the Dallas Morning News all the birds who depend on native trees and ground cover to shelter them from the open space around it. Judd is not against plans for more soccer fields, he just wasn't be to be sure birds have a home.
"They [soccer players] should have a place to play; I just wish it wouldn't impact the park," Judd said. "Maybe if more people were aware of the loss of habitat, they would rethink the location."
