More than 100 people have been detained and more than 200 matches are being investigated that could involve bribing of referees, players and other individuals, according to statements made byGerman prosecutors on Wednesday.
League and cup matches in several countries and international games are being investigated. No specific information on which matches are involved, or ifany World Cup games were under suspicion, has been released. During the World Cup, several Nigerian players expressed fears that a few of their teammates might be vulnerable to fixing attempts.
Prosecutors first announced in November details of the match-fixing investigation, which stems in part from the 2005 arrests of German referee Robert Hoyzer, who admittedtaking bribes and was sentenced to 29 months in
jail, and the ringleaders of the scheme, Ante Sapina and two of his brothers. Sapina was convicted of fraud in 2005 and sentencedto 35 months in prison.
