A maid got a hold of Uruguayan national team coach Oscar Washington Tabarez‘s ATM cards and systematically withdrew $500,000 over two years.
Itwas only after returning home from the 2010 World Cup, where Uruguay finished fourth, that Tabarez realized something might be wrong. When his family knew nothing of the withdrawals, he alerted theauthorities. Sums of $500 and $1,000 were withdrawn almost daily with ATM cards.
The maid covered up the scheme by destroying the bank statements when they arrived at Tabarez’s house. Shebought a house for $150,000, new Japanese car and restaurant with the money. Her sister and brother-in-law were also being held.
