[ONLINE WATCH] The Women's World Cup set a new Twitter record for the tweets per second when the end of the USA-Japan final was drawing 7,196 tweets per second.

And to show soccer's popularity across the board, the end to the Brazil-Paraguay match is now second on the tweet charts with 7,166 TPS.

The previous record was New Year's Eve 2010 in Japan, which hit 6,939 TPS at its peak. (Twitter is hugely popular in Japan.)

By comparison, Super Bowl 2011 had set a record for a sporting event with 4,064 TPS.

The record tweets per second for game at the 2010 World Cup was 3,283 when Japan beat Denmark.
