Transfers are rage at top programs

[2011 MEN’S PREVIEW] Top-ranked programs like Louisville, Akron and North Carolina, to name only three, have loaded up on transfers from other four-yearprograms. Most are from other NCAA Division I programs, but schools have also dipped into the small-college ranks for rare gems. Here’s a look at 37 top transfers who were established players beforemoving on to new programs …

D Paul Andrews, George Mason (Northern Kentucky). Scored three goals and had 10 assists in earning second-team All-Americanhonors for NKU, the 2010 NCAA Division II national champion.

M Jacob Barron, Penn State (UC Davis). Started 29 games in two seasons at UCD.

M Kevin Bick, San Diego State (Indiana). Played 22 games in two seasons with the Hoosiers. Father Sam is a former U.S.international.

GK Chris Blais, South Florida (Michigan). Named 2010 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Tournamenthonors as the Wolverines won the conference title en route to a Men’s College Cup appearance. Set UM single-season record with 17 victories.

F JulianCardona, Penn State (Butler). Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in 2009.

M Bruno Castro, Creighton (North Carolina). Moved to Omaha alongwith former UNC coach Elmer Bolowich. Played for Costa Rica at 2007 Under-17 World Cup.

M Greg Cochrane, Louisville(Virginia Tech). Second on the Hokies with two goals and seven assists in 2010. Started 16 games in 2009.

M A.J. Corrado, Indiana (SMU).Returns to Hoosier State, where he is a former Gatorade Player of the Year, after one season with the Mustangs.

D J.J. Elder, Campbell (AppalachianState). Ranked second on App. State in scoring as a freshman with five goals in 16 games in 2009.

F Benny Estes, Cal Poly (Saint Louis). Namedto the Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team in 2009. Shared scoring lead with three goals for Billikens in 2010.

F Ryan Findley, Notre Dame (Duke). Scored 17goals as a sophomore for Duke. His addition will make the Irish one of the favorites in the very competitive Big East.

GK Victor Francoz, Old Dominion(Lindenwood). Frenchman was two-time NAIA All-American.

GK Clark Hankins, VCU (College of Charleston).Two-year starter in goal at Charleston with a 16-10 record.

M Kegan Harkenrider, Louisville (Denver). Started 19 games and scored two goals as afreshman for the Pioneers.

D Matt Hedges, North Carolina (Butler). Led Butler to first undefeated regular season in 2010, scoring five goals andnotching two assists. Second-team All-American and Horizon League’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2010.

GK Justin Holmes, West Virginia (New Mexico).Had a 0.99 goals-against average with a 7-5-5 record and an NCAA tournament appearance for the Lobos. Recorded eight shutouts, including seven in a span of eight games.

M Luke Holmes, Akron (Notre Dame, Ohio). Englishman was named the 2010 NAIA National Player of the Year. Scored 70 goals in three college seasons. Once played as a youthplayer for Manchester City.

M Patrick Huang, Louisville (Virginia Tech). Scored goals in consecutive games against North Carolina and Duke and addedthree assists for the Hokies last season as a redshirt freshman.

M Jacob Hustedt, Washington (Cal Poly). Started 49 games in three seasons with theMustangs. Named to the All-Big West Conference second team in 2009.

M Jordan Kotsopoulos, Cleveland State (Northern Kentucky). Canadian was named tothe all-tournament team as a freshman at 2010 NCAA Division II.

M Jerry Maddi, Wisconsin (Eastern Illinois). Started every game for Panthers as asophomore after being named to All-Missouri Valley rookie team as a freshman.

M Victor Munoz, UCLA (Iona). Former Spanish youth international was the2010 MAAC Rookie of the Year after recording five assists in 17.

F Martin Ontiveros, Furman (Akron). Made 12 appearances as a freshman in 2010 for theZips after earning IMG Player of the Year honors.

M Sean O’Reilly, George Mason (St. Francis, Pa.). Second leading goal scorer at St. Francis in 2010with five goals. Worked his way up from team manager to appearing in all 19 matches with 16 starts as a redshirt junior. Pursuing a graduate degree in sports management.

F Richard Osterloh, Louisville (Mars Hill). Finished the year with a team-high 10 goals and dished out three assists in nine games for D2 Mars Hill. Earned him 2010South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year honors.

M Zach Portillos, Akron (Washington). Left-sided player who can serve the ball well. Scoredtwo game-winning goals in 2010 for Washington.

M Aodhan Quinn, Akron (Bradley). Zips are expecting big things from the MVP of the 2010 MissouriValley Tournament, the son of former U.S. international and San Jose Clash coach Brian Quinn.

M Michael Roman,Louisville (UCLA). Played 30 games in two season with the Bruins, who open at Louisville on Saturday.

F Dominick Sarle, UC Santa Barbara (St.John’s). Former U.S. U-17 had a big summer in the PDL with the Long Island Rough Riders.

D Justin Sass, Butler (Evansville). Two-year starterand 2009 Defensive MVP award winner for the Aces.

D Peter Schmetz, UC Santa Barbara (Westmont). Started all 18 games for NAIA school Westmont duringhis freshman year. The 6-foot-6 defender previously played in German Regionalliga for Fortuna Duesseldorf II.

M Joseph Schmid, Monmouth (Villanova).Named to 2010 Big East All-Rookie Team following a stellar freshman campaign for the Wildcats.

D Blake Schneider, Saint Louis (Evansville).Left-footed defender was a second-team All-Missouri Valley selection after leading the Purple Aces with eight assists. Registered nine assists as a sophomore and played in every game as afreshman.

F Hasani Sinclair, Penn State (USF). Scored 15 points in 21 games for the Bulls in 2009. Ranked third on the team with seven points in2010.

F Ben Speas, North Carolina (Akron). Started for the Zips in 2009 season that ended with a second-place finish at the Men’s College Cup and was12th man on their 2010 championship team.

D Howard Turk, George Mason (Virginia). Former U.S. U-17 started every game for Cavs in 2008 but made onlysix appearances in their 2009 national championship season.

F Reece Wilson, Central Conn. State (William Carey). Englishman scored 12 goals for NAIAschool William Carey as a freshman and was named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year 2009.
