[UC SANTA BARBARA-AKRON] Luis Silva‘s goal just 33 seconds into overtime gave No. 15 UC Santa Barbara a 3-2 win over No.3 Akron, handing the defending champion Zips their first loss of the season.

The goal was the second of the game for Silva, who had equalized in the 64th minute. Dom Sarle had put the gauchos ahead two minutes later, but Akron equalized on Thomas Schmitt‘s goal in the 69th minute.

JamaicanDarren Mattocks had put Akron ahead in the 15th minute.

The three goals it allowed matched the total it had given up in its first nine games.

The Zips were one of just five Division I programs yet to sustain a loss. They had lost just once during the regular run of play in their last 59 matches dating back to the start of the 2009season

The game drew 4,340 fans at Harder Stadium, site of the 2010 Men’s College Cup, where the Zips beat Louisville in the final for their first national title.
