In 2011, San Antonio had no pro soccer teams. This year, it will have at least one. And in the future, it could have two pro teams and two soccer stadiums.
Backed by school boardpresident-elect Ed Garza, who tried to lure an MLS team in 2005 when he was San Antonio’s mayor, the San Antonio Independent School District voted, 4-2, onMonday to add a soccer field at Alamo Stadium, despite protests of taxpayers. The same day plans for a new soccer facility to be opened in 2013 were unveiled.
Spurs Sports &Entertainment hopes to bring a USL team to San Antonio and play in Alamo Stadium. In 2010, $35 million in SAISD bonds were allocated for the run-down stadium.
The NASL will have anexpansion team in San Antonio in 2012. The Scorpions, owned by local businessman Gordon Hartman, will play at Heroes Stadium. They unveiled plans Monday for anew facility to be opened in 2013.
