[MARYLAND-NORTH CAROLINA] Despite the return of Under-20 Women’s World Cup champions Kealia Ohai,
Maryland becomes only the second team in UNC soccer history to beatCarolina three successive times. The other team was Santa Clara which beat UNC in the 1999 regular season and then in NCAA College Cup games in 2001 and 2002.
The Terrapinsoutplayed Carolina in the first half and they were rewarded with a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Alex Reed, the first allowed by the Tar Heels in 596 minutesdating back to a tally by Portland in the fifth minute of the season opener on Aug. 17.
Maryland made it 2-0 to play in the 55th minute on a goal by Hayley Brock, beating Heaberlin, who came on after the half.
Carolina cut the Maryland leads to 2-1 in the 78th minute when MariaLubrano converted a penalty kick after she was fouled in the box.
“I’m so proud of how our team responded from last Sunday,” said Maryland coach Jonathan Morgan. “The Fordham game was a dagger to our heart. It would have been very easy for our kids to feel sorry for themselves and lack confidence going into this game versus UNC.Instead, our team rolled up their sleeves and got to work this week. They had a great energy and focus for tonight’s game. It’s great to see the girls be rewarded for their hard work.”
