The Press Association is reporting that Queens Park Rangers defender Ryan Nelson could be set to leave the English Premier League club to take over as coach of Major League Soccerclub Toronto FC. The New Zealand international has had a solid season for QPR after joining from Blackburn Rovers over the summer, but at 35, he is understood to be interested in transitioning to acoaching role.
Nelson is currently in Toronto discussing the vacant post, after being granted a few days off by QPR coach Harry Redknapp. It is unclear whether the job inCanada would see Nelson make a playing return to MLS, where he spent four years with DC United earlier in his career.
“Nelsen is very important to us, a fantastic leader, a top player,”Redknapp said after QPR’s 1-1 FA Cup third-round draw with West Brom. “He has been offered a job in America and I think there is every chance he might want to go. He wants to be a manager and itis a chance for him to manage a club. He has been fantastic. I took him to Tottenham last year from Blackburn. He’s one of the best pros I’ve ever met in my life, a fantastic player, a great trainer.He is a massive part of your team. To lose him would be a massive blow for us.”
