FIFA on Tuesday confirmed that goal-line technology (GLT) will be used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The world governing body for soccer had successfully deployed goal-line technology (GLT) atthe 2012 Club World Cup in Japan, and will now roll it out during the 2013 Confederations Cup, as well as the World Cup the following summer.
Initially, FIFA licensed two systems, calledHawk-Eye and Goalref, but is now inviting other technology providers to submit tenders as well. Hawkeye involves the use of cameras, while GoalRef is a technology whereby a low frequency magneticfield surrounds the goal and is linked to an electronic circuit in the ball, which in a fraction of a second transmits confirmation of a goal to a referee’s watch. FIFA will decide on itspreferred provider in early April.
“The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-matchreferee tests,” FIFA said in a statement.
