Queens Park Rangers’ 1-1 draw at home to Wigan Athletic on Sunday was yet another nail in the coffin for the relegation-threatened club. A game that was labeled a “must-win” by coachHarry Redknapp before kickoff ended in disaster, as 10-man QPR conceded a 94th-minute equalizer to Wigan’s Shaun Maloney. The result left the London club sevenpoints away from both Wigan and Sunderland, which are tied on 31 points in the Premier League table (though Wigan has a game in hand on both clubs), with just six games to play. After the game, adistraught Redknapp described the result as “the toughest” of his career.
As The Guardian points out, QPR spent a small fortune during the January transfer window, andhas a hefty wage bill as a result, which means that if relegation should come to pass, not only will some of its stars want to look for work elsewhere, but a second-tier club doesn’t’ wantto be in the position of funding player salaries in the realm of $75,000 per week, either. That means likely departures for Loic Remy, Adel Taarabt, Julio Cesar, Rob Green, EstebanGranero and Junior Hoilett, the report says. It also points out that for overpaid players like Christopher Samba, who arrived in January for $20 million andwho may be paid as much as $150,000 per week, it could be difficult finding any clubs willing to take him on a similar deal.
