[U.S. OPEN CUP SCHEDULE: First Round] Three amateur teams affiliated with MLS clubs are among the teams in action Tuesday as the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup moves into the first round. The New York Red Bulls U23s represent the NPSL, while Portland Timbers U-23s and Sounders FC U-23s play in the PDL. For a look at the three teams, plus the complete first-round schedule ...

NEW YORK RED BULLS U23's. The New York Red Bulls U23 head down to the Jersey Shore to face the Ocean City Nor’easters at Carey Stadium.Coach John Wolyniec, who led the Red Bulls U23 team to a 2012 NPSL Northeast Division title with a record of 10-1-1, won the Open Cup with the Chicago Fire in 2010. The Red Bulls U23's, who open NPSL play May 26 at the Rhode Island Reds, have a deep roster, featuring Georgetown forward Brandon Allen, who was named the 2012 Soccer America Freshman of the Year and played for the USA at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship. Also on the roster are Maryland's Keith Cardona, Dan Metzger, Kyle Roach and Widner Saint Cyr.

PORTLAND TIMBERS U-23s. The Timbers U-23s host the NPSL Sacramento Gold at Jeld-Wen Field two days before they open their fifth PDL season against the Sounders FC U-23s. With former Akron coach Caleb Porter now in charge of the MLS Timbers, it should be no surprise that Zips Bryan Gallego (whose homegrown rights Portland acquired from New York), Saad Abdul-Salaam and David Meves have joined the Timbers U-23s. Meves, a Timbers Supplemental pick, finished his collegiate career at Akron in 2012 as the NCAA’s all-time leader in shutouts (54) and goalkeeper minutes played (8,068).

SOUNDERS FC U-23s. The Sounders FC U-23s, who advanced all the way to the 2012 PDL national final four as Western Conference champions, will take on Coast Soccer League champion Doxa Italia at Sunset Stadium in Sumner, Wash. The Sounders U-23s, who are playing in their first Open Cup, went 1-0-1 in pre-season exhibition matches, playing Bellingham United FC to a 0-0 draw and defeating Seattle University 1-0. Most of the Sounders U-23s are local products, though UCLA goalie Earl Edwards, Akron midfielder Eric Stevenson, Brazilian midfielder Lucas Baldin from USF and ETSU forward David Geno have joined the team for the summer.
