[MLS: Week 1] Seattle earned three points with the winning goal in the 94th minute, while down the road Portland salvaged a draw at home with a goal in the 93rd minute only seconds after Real Salt Lake preserved a 1-0 win at the LA Galaxy when Nick Rimando saved Robbie Keane's penalty kick in stoppage time.

Chad Barrett, one of six players who made their Seattle debuts, scored in the 94th minute to give the Sounders a 1-0 win over Sporting KC. The goal was the sixth for Seattle against Sporting KC in the 90th minute or later in their last seven meetings.

Philadelphia looked to have taken the three points in Portland, but Gaston Fernandez's goal after a corner kick was miscleared by a Union defender earned the Timbers a 1-1 tie.

It was déjà vu all over again for the Galaxy, whose 2013 campaign was plagued by giving up late goals. Joao Plata put RSL ahead in the 80th minute at StubHub Center, and though Keane had a chance to rescue the Galaxy, he hit his penalty kick right at Rimando, who dove to his right.

Week 1 Braces:
Will Bruin (2nd, 13th minutes), HOU (4-0 vs. NE)
Federico Higuain (27th, 90th minutes), CLB (3-0 vs. DC)
Kenny Miller (34th, 77th minutes), VAN (4-1 vs. NY)

The Columbus Crew and Vancouver Whitecaps both won big under new coaches on the opening day of the 2014 MLS season.

The Crew got two goals from Federico Higuain as it beat D.C. United, 3-0, on the road in Gregg Berhalter's MLS coaching debut, while Kenny Miller had two goals for the 'Caps in a 4-1 win over visiting New York to mark Carl Robinson's start of his MLS coaching career. Uruguayan Sebastian Fernandez (set up by Darren Mattocks) and Chilean Pedro Morales in their MLS debuts joined Miller in scoring excellent goals for Vancouver in a match it could have had seven or eight goals.

Oscar Pareja
, who moved from Colorado to FC Dallas in January, was also a winner in his new coaching position as Dallas beat Montreal, 3-2, in a match that also featured Frank Klopas' first game with his new team.

Sounders v KC was one of the worst MLS performances of the decade; helter-skelter Ping-Pong, no purpose, plenty of fouling, and nothing that resembled soccer. And why are the TV ratings so low? This game was horrible and Kyle Martino had the nerve to ask a Sounder in a post game interview,..."how do you build from this performance." Martino is either delusional or he can't state the truth.

Someone has a bit of a skewed perspective or an axe to grind. First, "plenty of fouling"--far fewer fouls than the average game, IMO. (I was there.) The ref shut down the usual suspects early and had far better control of that aspect of the game than some MLS refs that have plagued us for years. Second, "worst performances of a decade"--well, that's just laughable. Again, I was there (along with 39000 of my friends) and we generally thought it a good game, good enough to be on our feet for 90 minutes+ in the pouring rain and chill wind. I can think of 10 games that just I have seen that might qualify for "worst MLS performance of the decade" and this was assuredly not one of them. As for the "beauty" of the game--it was pouring rain and windy and played on plastic and just happened to be the first game of the season for both teams. There are 30+ more games for each team this year. Give it a rest.

Margaret, I agree with you. Although the first half left a lot to be desired. However weather conditions, first game of the season, Sounders had six new players on the field, 25 fowls by SKC (16 in the first half). No it wasn't the best game ever (great last 15 minutes) but VERY far from the worse. ***Thought ref did an excellent job.
