Rowdies acquire Pickins from New England

[NASL 2014 COUNTDOWN] In a rare transfer involving MLS and NASL clubs, the New England Revolution sent goalkeeper Matt Pickens, whom it had picked up on waivers from Colorado last week, to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who signed the 31-year-old keeper to a multi-year contract. No terms were announced though media reports suggested a fee of about $150,000 was paid.

Pickens started in goal for the Rapids when they won MLS Cup 2010. He holds the Rapids’ records in career games in goal (116), shutouts (29), and wins (41) but became expendable when Clint Irwin won the starting job last year after Pickens was injured. Pickens had spent part of the offseason on a tryout at Stabaek, Bob Bradley's new Norwegian club.

Rowdies general manager Perry Van Der Beck termed the signing "a marquee signing that will add a great deal of quality and experience to our squad. Our goal is to win another championship this season, so we're excited to have a player of Matt's caliber on our roster."

Pickens also played 40 matches for the Chicago Fire (2004-2007), then had a brief stint with England’s Queens Park Rangers in 2008. After the season Pickens returned to Major League Soccer, joining Colorado after Chicago traded his MLS rights.

COSMOS SIGN ZOBECK. The New York Cosmos signed goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck, a former FC Dallas backup after a successful trial during their trip to Dubai. The former Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year was selected in the second round of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas out of Valparaiso.
