Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers has warned Manchester United’s new boss Louis van Gaal that the fierce competitiveness of the Premier League will make it difficult for him towin the title in his first season. Van Gaal, who has won titles with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, has enjoyed a strong start to life as United coach after winning the International ChampionsCup, a preseason tournament in the USA, but Rodgers believes the Dutchman is in for a shock when the Premier League season begins on Aug. 16.

“I think what he’ll find is the competition inthis league will be different to any other league that he’s worked in,” the Welsh coach said. “In a lot of the other leagues, there are one or two teams and those are the teams that areexpected to win. This is a league where the top team plays the bottom team and on any given day you can lose. You don’t get that a lot in the other leagues. I think the competition willprobably take him by (surprise), and that’s from foreign managers I have spoken to over the years.”
