Kempin saves Sporting KC, Timbers romp in Guyana

[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] MLS champion Sporting Kansas City was on familiar ground when it opened Concacaf Champions League play in the Nicaraguan city of Esteli, but it could not repeat its win of last year in its CCL debut, settling for a 1-1 tie with Real Esteli in a match that required a huge game from young keeper Jon Kempin. The Portland Timbers had better luck in Guyana, winning in their first CCL match with a 4-1 defeat of Alpha United.

An own goal by Honduran Jorge Claros in the 6th minute dug a hole that Sporting KC got out of 10 minutes later when Spaniard Toni Dovale equalized.

On the Esteli goal, Kempin -- playing his third consecutive match following injuries to Eric Kronberg and Andy Gruenebaum -- slid low to make the initial save on Daniel Da Silva's shot but the rebound ricocheted off Claros' body and went into the goal. Dovale's equalizer came on a left-footed free kick that was bent inside the near post.

Esteli had a chance to go ahead later in the first half but Eduardo Praes' header struck the outside of the post. In the second half, Kempin made big saves on Da Silva and Juan Barrera to preserve the draw.

In 2013, Sporting KC had won, 2-1, in Nicaragua and tied Esteli, 1-1, at Sporting Park.

The Timbers got goals from four different players, two in each half at Providence Stadium, a local cricket ground, in Georgetown. Steve Zakuani, Maximiliano Urruti, Fanendo Adi and Alvas Powell each scored goals as the Timbers started 11 different players from the team that started Saturday at New England in MLS play. Only Adi, Urruti, Zakuani and midfielder Rodney Wallace saw action against the Revs.

Defending champion Cruz Azul is now winless in two games after falling to Panama's Chorrillo FC, 1-0, on Yustin Arboleda's rebound of his saved penalty kick in the 70th minute at the Estadio Maracana. American Ventura Alvarado was among the scorers as Mexico's Club America hammered Bayamon FC, 6-1, in the Puerto Rican club's regional debut. Its goal was scored by Trinidadian Nicholas Walker, on loan from FC Dallas.
