FIFA barred Russian deputy prime minister Vitaly Mutko from running for re-election for a place on the FIFA Council after he failed an eligibility check carried out by the FIFA review committee because his ministerial role contravened FIFA's statutes. Mutko has been connected with the doping scandal that engulfed Russian sports, but his ban had nothing to do with the FIFA decision, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
