Giovanni Reyna scored on penalty kick to decide the Generation adidas Cup Premier Division final, 1-0, in NYCFC’s favor over Mexico’s Tigres. In the final of the top flight GAChampions Division, River Plate beat Flamengo, 2-1, while the New Red Bulls finished third.

The 14-year-old Reyna, son of Hall of Famer Claudio Reyna, also won thetournament Golden Ball (MVP) while NYCFC keeper Johan Penaranda won the Golden Glove.

NYCFC, coached by Matt Pilkington, did not concede a goal in its five games in Frisco,Texas.

The New York Red Bulls were the only MLSteam to reach the semifinals of the Champions Division. In group play, they rebounded from a 3-1 loss to Estudiantes de la Plata to beat Toronto FC, 3-1, and Tijuana, 5-0, before falling to Flamengoin a penalty-kick shootout after a 1-1 tie in the semifinals. The Red Bulls finished third with a PK shootout win over Independiente del Valle after a 1-1 tie in the third-place game.

  1. Ben Mines is only 16 and has been playing for RBNY II. He may be the next one to make the breakthrough for the first team in the next year or so.
