Villa had come close at the end of the first half with NYCFC trailing 1-0 when he hit a shot that rattle the crossbar. He earned a penalty he converted to even the score in the 52nd minute and then teamed up with Jack Harrison to volley the Englishman's cross for the winner in the 77th minute.

NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira says he is not surprised by the success Villa, the 2016 MLS MVP, has had since moving to MLS in 2015.

"It's not easy to be the top goal scorer in the Spanish history [59 goals in 97 games]," he said. "It's not easy to win the Champions League or win the World Cup. The quality is there and it's always going to be there. He's really good. He has passion and love for the game. In our society, we judge people a bit too early and a bit too quick and we just have to take it case by case and David's is a positive one for the young players in our club and for the fans."
