Injuries continued to mount on the U.S. national team backline with just two weeks before camp opens before the September World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras. DeAndre Yedlin missed the start of the EPL season with a hamstring injury, Omar Gonzalez was injured in Copa MX and John Brooks also left in the first half of his first match for Wolfsburg.

Yedlin was injured in preseason and expected to miss 2-3 weeks, pushing his recovery to the eve of Coach Bruce Arena's roster announcement. The lengths of the layoffs for Gonzalez and Brooks aren't known. Gonzalez did not dress for Pachuca this weekend, while Brooks exited with an apparent leg injury in Wolfsburg's 1-0 win over Eintracht Norderstedt in the DFB Pokal, the German Cup.

To make matters worse, Jorge Villafana, the USA's starting left back, hasn't played in Liga MX since the season resumed, having lost his starting job at Santos to 18-year-old Gerardo Arteaga.

Other injuries: Christian Pulisic sat out Borussia Dortmund's cup game as a precautionary measure with a slight injury. He will return to practice on Monday ... Orlando City's Dom Dwyer was sidelined after needing minor nose surgery to repair an injury picked up in the match against Atlanta United.

Goals: Justin Morrow scored two goals -- his first multi-goal game in MLS -- to lead Toronto FC to a 4-1 win over the Portland Timbers that increased its lead in the Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield race to four points.

Morrow, who has been playing a wing back position for Toronto FC, admitted he hasn't had an easy time returning to TFC after his first USMNT call-up in four years,

"It’s hard to put into words how difficult that is for someone who hasn’t been with the national team in a while," he said. "To have that big moment of winning the Gold Cup and playing for the national team for the first time in four years is a big moment for me. Then to come back here and transition is tough. I give Michael [Bradley] and Jozy [Altidore] a lot of credit because they’ve been doing it for their whole career and it shows how good they are at it but it wasn’t easy for me. It feels like a weight off my shoulders to get the goals tonight and help the team."

Toronto FC-Portland Highlights:

Also ...

Timmy Chandler scored the first goal in Eintracht Frankfurt's 3-0 win at Ernstebrueck in the DFB Pokal ... Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan set up Clint Dempsey for the Seattle Sounders' winner in a 1-0 victory over Sporting KC ... Bobby Wood had the lone goal in Hamburg's 3-1 loss to shorted-handed third division club Osnabrueck in the German Cup.

Other Americans abroad: Danny Williams made his English Premier League debut, entering promoted Huddersfield Town's game in the second half at right back. The Terriers won, 3-0, in their first EPL game ... McKinze Gaines, 19, debuted for German second division club Darmstadt in a 3-1 loss at Jahn Regensburg in the DFB Pokal ... " DeAndre Yedlin is injured and will miss Newcastle United's return to the EPL." What a surprise!

Not having Brooks would be a loss, Gonzales, not so much. He makes a lot of mistakes. Good to see Morrow get the goals. I hope he gets more chances with the Nats. I think he can do far better than he showed in the Gold Cup
