Clint Dempsey's penalty kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time gave the Seattle Sounders a 2-1 win over Minnesota United that moved it into first place in the Western Conference.

The goal was Dempsey's fourth in four games since returning from the Gold Cup for the Sounders, whose unbeaten streak now stands at nine games.

Mexico. Jorge Villafana, who missed the first two Liga MX matches after returning from the Gold Cup, started in Santos Laguna's 2-0 loss at Tijuana on Friday night. He was one of only three Americans who played in Liga MX this weekend along with Jonathan Bornstein (Queretaro) and Rodrigo Lopez (Toluca).

Other Americans in Europe. Haji Wright, 19, scored in his European pro debut, coming off the bench for German second division leader Sandhausen and converting the third goal in a 4-0 at Dynamo Dresden ... Weston McKennie, 19, played the last 12 minutes of Schalke 04's 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in their Bundesliga opener.
