A summary of MLS transactions for January 2001: Jan. 31 MLS -- Signed forward Ali Curtis (Duke), forward Brian Mullan (Creighton), midfielder Bryan Namoff (Bradley), defender Craig Ziadie (Richmond) and goalkeeper David Clemente (UAB). Jan. 26 D.C. United -- Re-signed defender/midfielder Geoff Aunger (Canada) to a multi-year contract. Miami Fusion -- Re-signed midfielder Jim Rooney to a multi-year contract. Jan. 25 MLS -- Signed forwards Santino Quaranta (Archbishop Curley HS, Baltimore, Md.) and Edward Johnson (Flagler Palm Coast HS) as Project-40 players. MetroStars -- Re-signed defender Mike Petke to a multi-year contract. Jan. 22 MLS -- Signed defender Nick Downing (Maryland), defender Jose Burciaga, Jr. (Duncanville High School) and forward Edson Buddle (Long Island Rough Riders) as Project-40 players. Jan. 19 Tampa Bay Mutiny -- Re-signed Carlos Valderrama (Colombia) to a multi-year contract. Jan. 16 L.A. Galaxy -- Signed defender Alexi Lalas as a Discovery Player. New England Revolution -- Re-signed midfielder Leonel Alvarez (Colombia). Jan. 14 D.C. United -- Signed defender Mark Watson (Canada) as a Discovery Player. Jan. 12 D.C. United -- Re-signed forward Raul Diaz Arce (El Salvador). Jan. 11 MLS -- Signed forward Devin Barclay (Annapolis, Md., McDonough HS), forward Chris Carrieri (University of North Carolina), forward Isaias Bardales (San Jose State) and midfielder Miguel Saavedra (Milwaukee Trade & Technical HS) as Project-40 players. Colorado Rapids -- Panamanian forward Jorge Daly Valdes signed with Omiya Ardija (Japan). Columbus Crew -- Re-signed forward Dante Washington to a multi-year contract. Los Angeles Galaxy -- Called up defender Craig Waibel from the Seattle Sounders (A-League), midfielder Kevin Legg from the San Diego Flash (A-League) and forward Sheldon Thomas (Orange County Wave) for TFC Champions Cup. Jan. 10 Chicago Fire -- Re-signed defender Andrew Lewis to a multi-year contract. New England Revolution -- Re-signed defender Ted Chronopoulos to a multi-year contract. Jan. 9 MLS -- Ivan Gazidis promoted to Deputy Commissioner, and Nelson Rodriguez promoted to Assistant to the Commissioner. D.C. United -- Called up forward Ronald Simmonds from the Hershey Wildcats (A-League) for the TFC Champions Cup. New England Revolution -- Re-signed forward Johnny Torres to a multi-year contract. Jan. 8 Tampa Bay Mutiny -- Re-signed midfielder Steve Ralston to a multi-year contract. Jan. 4 Chicago Fire -- Traded Czech defender Lubos Kubik to the Dallas Burn for midfielder Sergi Daniv. Dallas Burn -- Traded Ukrainian midfielder Sergi Daniv for Czech defender Lubos Kubik.
