WORLD CUP: Reyna named to all-star team

By Paul Kennedy in Tokyo U.S. captain Claudio Reyna was named to the 16-player MasterCard All-Star Team for the 2002 World Cup. Reyna recovered from an injury kept him out of the opening U.S. game to have an excellent World Cup. He was exceptional in the 2-0 win over Mexico in the round of 16 and tore the German defense to shreds in the first half of the 1-0 loss in the quarterfinals. Reyna is the first American named to an official FIFA World Cup All-Star Team. Alexi Lalas was one of nine players who earned ''honorable mention'' during selection of the 1994 World Cup All-Star Team. Four Brazilians -- Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and Ronaldo were picked. Germany, the other finalist, has three players selected: goalie Oliver Kahn midfielder Michael Ballack and striker Miroslav Klose. Turkey also had three all-stars: Recber Rustu, Ozalan Alpay and Hasan Sas. South Korea had two players named to the all-star team: Hong Myung Bo and Yoo Sang Chul. Senegal's El-Hadji Diouf, England's Sol Campbell and Spain's Fernando Hierro completed the team. Only players on teams that reached the quarterfinals were eligible. The selections were made by the FIFA Technical Study Group.
