Fox Soccer Channel will broadcast the first men's game of the season in its NSCAA College Match of the Week series Thursday night when St. John's hosts UConn in a battle of perennial
national contenders (kickoff: 8 pm ET).
The Big East opponents find themselves unranked after three weeks but are on the rebound.
UConn (2-2-1) earned its first two wins of the
season last weekend, beating Rutgers, 2-1, in overtime on Friday and Villanova two days later by the same score. The Huskies' big threats are Jamaicans Akeem
, who assisted on both goals against Rutgers, and O'Brian White
, who scored in both Big East matches.
For St. John's (4-2-0),
Swedish defender Patrik Engstrom
needs to be watched. He scored twice in the first six minutes of the Red Storm's 5-2 win over Georgetown. Former U.S. U-17
had a goal and two assists against the Hoyas to give him a team-high three goals and three assists in six games. The victory over the Hoyas
followed a 3-2 loss to Seton Hall in the Red Storm's Big East opener.
The Red Storm holds a slight 11-10-3 advantage in an all-time series with the Huskies that dates back to the 1981
season. Each of the last 10 meetings have been decided by a goal or less.
