Brazil Beat Croatia Like Mere Mortals

Perhaps, as the Guardian says, Brazil's 1-0 victory over Croatia was "no statement of intent" from the world champions, but everyone in the tournament will note that the team of superstars, the overwhelming favorites, really didn't look THAT good. They didn't look bad either, but the Croatians, despite being forced into defending for most of the 90 minutes, were able to eke out two or three good chances. Surely, the Argentines or the high-flying Spaniards would be able to pull a few more tricks out of their sleeves against Brazil than the stolid Croats? The Guardian says Ronaldhino was good but not his usual amazing self, and while Adriano looked a little lumbering, Ronaldo looked downright fat. He had few positive touches, losing the ball most of the time when it was played to him. In 69 minutes, Ronaldo managed just one shot. Neverhteless, Coach Carlos Alberto Parriera has already confirmed he will start against Australia on Sunday. Of the divine quartet, Kaka was by far the brightest spot; he scored the game's only goal with an outstandingly precise left-footed shot from about 20 yards, his favorite spot, and added the most life to the game with his probing runs and dangerous passing.
