Liverpool's Xabi Alonso scored a wonder-goal against Newcastle United last night, firing from some 65 yards out after tackling Charles N'Zogbia well inside his own half. Had he not tripped as he
backpedaled toward goal, Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper, a stand-in for injured regular No. 1 Shay Given, would surely have saved the shot that bounced on its way to goal. Liverpool went on to
comfortably win the EPL makeup match 2-0, but it could have easily been 3- or 4- or 5-0. Xabi Alonso was also crucial in the first goal, providing Steve Finnan with an inch perfect pass that he
centered to Dirk Kuyt to drill home his first Liverpool goal. Liverpool needed the result to get back on track after two consecutive defeats in the Premiership and a lackluster 0-0 outing in the
Champions League last week. Former Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy also had a lively game, which ended in a fracas in the tunnel after the final whistle, as did Luis Garcia, who was desperately
unlucky not to score, hitting the post just before Xabi Alonso's stunning effort.
