College Men: Stanford first to quarterfinals

Roger Levesque scored two goals Friday night, the latter a knockout punch that secured Stanford a spot among the elite eight in the NCAA Division I men's soccer championship with a 3-1 victory over visiting Portland. The third-seeded Cardinal (18-1-1) also got a goal from Matt Janusz, who netted three in Stanford's second-round victory over Santa Clara, as it advanced to next weekend's quarterfinals against the winner of Saturday's St. Louis-Loyola (Md.) third-round game. Levesque fired Stanford ahead in the 18th minute after Janusz's blast from the top of the bar was blocked by Portland defender Isaac Vanderburg but fell to the Pacific-10 Conference MVP. Janusz got the second midway through the second half after a nifty run by Johanes Maliza, but the Pilots (13-6-1) halved the deficit with eight and a half minutes to go when Jarrod Weis' free kick into the Cardinal box deflected off Stanford's Abe Geiger and inside the near post. Geiger was assessed an own goal. Levesque scored his second goal, and 12th of the season, from a Matt Moses pass in the 84th minute. Portland was unable to do much with the opportunities it created, twice hitting the crossbar -- on a Nate Jaqua header in the first half and a Weis blast in the second -- and firing wide after a superb run through the Stanford defense by U.S. U-20 standout Kelly Gray. Three third-round games are scheduled Saturday, with the last four slated for Sunday. NCAA DIVISION I MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP THIRD ROUND Friday's result Stanford 3 Portland 1.
