U.S. Abroad (Jan. 30): Vanney starts again

L.A. Galaxy defender Greg Vanney, on loan to Bastia of the French first division, started his second consecutive match in a 1-0 loss to Auxerre. Joe-Max Moore, meanwhile, played 90 minutes for Everton for the fifth time this season in a scoreless draw at Aston Villa and Brad Friedel's Blackburn Rovers lost to Arsenal.

ò Greg Vanney (Bastia, D1) vs. Auxerre, 0-1. Started: 90 minutes. Vanney started his second straight match for Bastia, who played with 10 men for more than half the game because midfielder Sebastien Piocelle was sent off in the 38th minute for his second caution. French Under-21 star Djibril Sisse scored the lone goal in the 76th minute when Olivier Kapo gained the endline before slipping him a pass in front of the goal. ò David Regis (Metz, D1) vs. Guingamp, 2-4. DNP. Regis was not on the substitutes list for this match.

ò Brad Friedel (Blackburn, PL) vs. Arsenal, 2-3. Started: 90 minutes. Overmatched Blackburn surrendered two goals in the first 21 minutes, but clawed back to tie on a pair of Matt Jansen goals before halftime. Arsenal neutralized its natural advantage when defender Oleg Luzhny earned his second yellow card in the 58th minute. The Gunners' international stars still came through, however, as Robert Pires fed Dennis Bergkamp for a close-range finish, his second goal of the match, in the 75th minute. ò Joe-Max Moore (Everton, PL) vs. Aston Villa, 0-0. Started: 90 minutes. Moore started in midfield, largely due to a series of injuries, including one to Paul Gascoigne. Everton primarily sat back against the home side and remained unbeaten in its past six matches, league and cup combined. Moore has appeared in 13 of Everton's 24 Premier League matches this season, playing 90 minutes in three of those. He also has played 90 minutes in two FA Cup games.
