The U.S. under-17 national team is in first place in its group after two days of the Football International Solidarity Foundation Tournament in Gaeta, Italy.

The Americans opened with a 2-1 win over England Thursday thanks to goals from Guillermo Gonzalez and Jacob Peterson. Gonzalez, who is being courted by MLS and several foreign clubs, scored on a penalty. Peterson was taken down in the box for the penalty and scored the gamewinner.

The Americans tied Russia, 0-0, Friday. They meet Yugoslavia in their group finale Sunday. The group winners meet at the Stadio Riciniello in Gaeta Monday.

Standings after Day 2 in Group B: U.S. 4 points (2-1 goal difference); England 3 (4-2); Yugoslavia 3 (3-5); Russia 1 (2-3).

The tournament is being staged to commemorate the victims of Sept. 11.
