WUSA Spring Training: Roster moves

Bay Area drops Pells, Wilson The Bay Area CyberRays, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit and Boston Breakers have announced their final, 20-player rosters, with the other four teams expected to announce their rosters soon. CyberRays coach Ian Sawyers cut goalkeeper Laurie Pells, a former Philadelphia player whom the team acquired in the waiver draft, and forward Kelly Wilson, who joined the club as a tryout player. Sawyers put defender Linda Kurtyka and goalkeeper Janine Szpara on the reserve list. Kurtyka (torn quadriceps muscle in her right leg) is injured and is expected to be out 2-3 weeks, but midfielder Lauren Molinaro (broken ankle) has already filled the C-Rays one-player injured list. Kurtyka likely will miss the April 14 inaugural game but could be ready for the CyberRaysÆ home opener April 29 against the Boston Breakers in Spartan Stadium. Bay Area CyberRays Roster

Spirit waives four San Diego Spirit head coach Carlos Juarez set his roster for the 2001 season, waiving four players to get down to the league-mandated 20-player limit. Juarez released three defenders and a goalkeeper, cutting Melissa Ribaudo, Holly Broome and Jennifer Babel, as well as third goalkeeper Melissa Moore, who was picked up by Philadelphia in the waiver draft and put onto the Charge's 20-player roster where she will compete for a starting spot with 1999 Women's World Cup veteran Saskia Webber. Broome and Babel are still eligible to be a part of the Spirit's three-player reserve squad. The reserve players will train with the Spirit and be eligible to be brought up to the 20-player roster. Juarez will name his reserves next week. Bubble players that made the final roster include defender Karissa Hampton, the Spirit's first pick in the college draft who played for UCLA in the NCAA Championship game last December, former Portland forward Tara Koleski, who was an 11th-round draft pick in the inaugural WUSA draft, and midfielder Erin Montoya from Santa Clara, who was taken in the 12th round. Juarez also chose 36-year-old midfielder Trudi Sharpsteen, a 14th-round draft pick who will be the oldest player in the WUSA. Defender Rhiannon Tanaka, a former All-American at both UCLA and USC, made the team after coming all the way through local tryouts. The Spirit will face the U.S. under-21 national team on Saturday at noon in its final match of the WUSA Spring Training Tournament being held at the ARCO Olympic Training Center.
