MLS Spring Training: Tampa Bay 2 San Jose 1

Mamadou Diallo and Josh Keller each converted penalty kicks as Tampa Bay downed San Jose 2-1 in Spring Training action Friday night at Lockhart Stadium. Diallo created the game-winning goal in the 77th minute, taking a neat Carlos Valderrama feed through the top of the box. Diallo was taken down by San Jose defender Wade Barrett for a penalty kick. "Big Mama" blasted the PK past Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon, just inside the left post. San Jose had several chances to tie the score in the game's frantic final moments. Mutiny defender John Maessner headed an Ian Russell shot off his goal line, while Earthquake rookie Eddie Robinson sailed a final shot over the crossbar as stoppage time expired. The Mutiny (1-0) knotted the score at 1-1 just after halftime. Diallo, MLS's top scorer in 2000 with 26 goals, was hauled down in the box by Earthquakes guest player Troy Dayak off a throw-in down the left wing. Keller stepped in and barely pushed the ensuing penalty kick past Cannon. "The fitness level on our side is close to being ready. I am happy with the way the team played tonight," Keller said. "I'm optimistic that coach has us prepared to be an exciting offensive team again this year." San Jose (0-1) struck for a goal in the 25th minute, as three newcomers combined for a goal. Defender Jeff Agoos took an indirect kick on the left wing and swung the ball into the box. Striker Dwayne DeRosario took possession on the right side and quickly sent the ball to the back post, where midfielder Manny Lagos headed it past Mutiny goalkeeper Scott Garlick for the opening goal from six yards out. "It felt good to get on the board early," Lagos said. "We are really excited for the season, with coach Frank Yallop we have made a new start. Even though we lost this game, we can take a lot of positive things out of what we did tonight." The Earthquakes had several golden opportunities to score a second goal in the first half. Mutiny midfielder Steve Ralston cleared a Ronald Cerritos header off the line in the 44th minute. Defender Chad McCarty cleared a DeRosario chance from the goal mouth in the 19th minute with the game still scoreless. March 16 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Tampa Bay 2 San Jose 1.
